10 Effective Ways to Make Your Neck Look Younger

The neck is usually the first to show signs of aging, especially with women. It is a well-known fact because the skin here is thinner than in other parts of the body and, moreover, it has fewer sebaceous glands, which is why it loses faster elasticity, as well as for lack of any muscle in this area. Fortunately, age-related changes can be effectively combated.

I’ve put together some popular tips that you’ve tried that can prevent aging and make your neck younger longer.

Drink alcohol less

10 Effective Ways to Make Your Neck Look Younger

Abstinence: I rarely drink alcohol. I had a drink last night; the one before was in December at the office Christmas party 3 months ago, and the one before was in August. I don’t really like the taste of it so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything, which is really helpful to be fair. Everyone knows that alcohol ages you, and I can tell you that the next day I had a drink, it shows noticeably on my face.

Very little processed foods

Again, this is lucky because I don’t like fast food and most highly processed foods, aside from the occasional gummy sweets or treat. I prefer freshly prepared foods because I feel they taste better and I feel better when I eat them (ie. freshly made gelato as per in the photo above rather than the mass-produced stuff, for example). I’m not a fan of eating foods that have ingredients that aren’t natural or that I can’t pronounce. As a child or teenager, this wasn’t the case at all, but once I finished university the switch felt really natural – and the physical change was pretty dramatic, my neck starts to look younger.

Exercise

There are many different exercises to keep your neck and face muscles fit. Here are some of them:

Move the lower jaw back and forth.

Protrude your lips (in the shape of the letter “О”) and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat this exercise several times. Then, do the same, pronouncing the sound “E” like in “eel.”

Sit straight, press your right hand against your forehead. Press your hand with force without tilting your head. Hold this position for 10 seconds.

Although I’ve done quite a bit of gym and training over the course of my life, at this point I prefer an active lifestyle over being in a cramped gym. Some even suggest that running or high-intensity exercises can age you, so it’s a great time to make the switch to resistance training, sports you enjoy, or even the most humble yet effective exercises of all: walking. Regardless, it’s a great way to get those endorphins going while keeping back the clock as much as is biologically possible, inside and out.

Superfoods

I don’t know if there is any magic in the so-called superfoods. What I can tell you is that when I discovered avocados in my early 30s it was such a revelation that at one point I was eating 2 per day – they were delicious! Friends and colleagues soon after started asking me if I was using some kind of miracle cream because my skin was looking absolutely amazing. It took me a while to realize it was from all the avocados! (I’ve reduced my intake since I realized the calorie content!) My diet is also full of salmon, blueberries and others of these foods, because luckily I really enjoy them.

Haircut

It seems to be a well-known idea that getting a fringe (bangs, as they’re called in the US), takes years off your neck. I’m not sure why that is but all the before and after photos I’ve seen of friends and strangers, when done well, has exactly that effect. And the years I had my fringe definitely took about 5 years off of me.

Sun

Obviously UV rays can be damaging so it’s important to get some sun with caution…but it’s important to get some sun! It brightens your complexion, gives you some much needed Vitamin D, and improves your mood – which is a perfect segue into my next point…

Be happy

If you feel happy, you exude energy to others of joy and optimism which is so characteristic of the naivete’ of youth. Enjoy life and the things you love, be it friends, travel, or whatever activities make you happy to be alive. Keep a gratitude journal. Treat yourself: maybe a dinner at a favorite restaurant once a month, or tickets to the theatre; whatever brings you joy. Keep your child-like wonder no matter how old you get. Assume the best in people where possible. Cynicism towards life and others will eat away at you over time, in a visible way.

Don’t wear heavy jewelry.

Heavy necklaces and pendants stretch the gentle skin on the neck. It’s better to wear them only on special occasions. Due to the same reason, it’s better to refuse to wear synthetic turtleneck sweaters with tight collars.

Look after your posture.

First of all, a bad posture can be the reason for headaches and neck pain. Secondly, due to the constant bending, wrinkles can appear and they are not easy to get rid of.

There’s one more enemy of beautiful skin and a good posture — the cell phone. Many people hold it lower than the eye level when they read or watch something and this also provokes the appearance of wrinkles.

Moisturize your skin regularly

At first glance it seems obvious, however, many women forget that the neck, just like the face, has to be moisturized regularly. You don’t need a special lotion as your regular face cream will be just as good for your neck. You do have to pay attention to how you apply it to your neck because it is important to move your fingers gently upwards.

It’s also useful to include some beauty procedures that we are used to doing to our face for our necks, as well. For example, the skin on your neck needs gentle exfoliation just like your face does. It’s better to use delicate remedies. For example, you can mix yogurt and oat flakes in order to make a suitable scrub. It will help remove dead skin cells without hurting the gentle skin on the neck.
